We had our first confirmed case of a member being banned for issues surrounding plagiarism, dishonesty, and posting of other people's work. This WILL NOT be tolerated. If you're found out to have violated these rules your account and all posts will be deleted. This site is a place for people learning the art of tattooing to share and help each other learn. Posting images of other's work is not only plagiarism, it's dishonest. There is no way to improve your skills if we cannot watch you grow as an artist. As a friend of mine always says, "it's about progress, not perfection."
On the subject of using another artist's flash design as your reference for a tattoo is absolutely OK, so long as you give credit and DON'T claim the "design" as your own. If a piece has been traced or reinterpreted please credit original artist and/or source. We believe that there is great value in studying, tracing & copying the work of other artists, past and present, but do not feel that Ink Trails is a suitable forum for posting such work unless it is clearly stated that the work being posted is a copy and is not to be entered into any of the competitions. Most of the tattoo pioneers all drew modified variations on the same basic designs. Some even traced flash and colored it themselves. In most tattoo shops across the world, you can choose a design from the wall that has probably been redrawn hundreds of times, with subtle variations. The problem lies in taking credit for another artist's exact design. It's pretty simple, just use common sense. I also want to bring attention to the fact that we DO NOT allow posting of any copyrighted materials on this forum. That includes flash, books/manuals, and videos that you do not own the copyrights to. People make a living from their work, and if it's no longer profitable to produce these materials, they will stop offering it. You know the drill. Let's all strive to foster a spirit of honesty and integrity on this forum. Dig it. -------------------- Stay humble.

I'm really glad this was posted... I am fairly new to the forum and was starting to have some serious doubts about stuff as I sat back and watched people putting copies of others work on. Its hard to watch that when you struggle to learn and progress, except criticism and the highs and lows and good and bad days as we learn.
I for one ( and am one of MANY ) who wouldn't even consider plagiarism am happy this has been brought to light and recognized. I'd rather take a slating for work others didn't appreciate than lie to get a pat on the back. I'd rather only have 1 tattoo a month to post and talk about, than to fake 2 a week to make me look better than others. Or non of us could ever learn and have trust in other peoples opinions if we have no idea in the back of our head if its truly their work or not. Thats a damn shame. good to see it mentioned :-) -------------------- ..Damn it...

Tony your Tattoobox Vidieo is a revelation to learners ,not to mention the money saved not having to buy how to DVD's. Your site is the best "how to" site on the net. Keep it up |

Derk, That issue is debatable. What we are referring to is people copying someone work and claiming it as their own (without interpreting/modifying it) or distributing material that is copyrighted. In the old days of tattooing, every design was mostly copied and interpreted. That's why you see so many variations fo the same thing. Owen Jensen would draw a gypsie woman, and Karl Lark, Bert Grimm and almost every other artist would literally redraw it in their own style. These days, contemporary artists are more protective about their art. I can't tell you where the line is. Just use the golden rule: how would you feel if someone used your image and tattooed it on them self (or someone else)? Personally, I would be flattered, but then again I don't make a living off of tattooing. As it pertains to the forum, we just can't allow distribution of other's material. -------------------- Stay humble.

If you use some-ones ideas or something to create a design around it would only be the right thing to mention it. I think it also give the piece a story behind it.
Thumps up. |
