Don't have any experience with barbicide , but i got madacide cause it sems to be the general consensus that it's the stuff to use.
I'm only here because I'm not all there.

It's basically a form of ammonia. It's essentially ammonia, perfume, and colouring.
It certainly has a distinct smell, and as long as you're not using it to sterilize anything, there shouldn't be any problem cleaning your work area with it.

madacide or bleach solution is my favorite... ammonia's smell reminds me of bad cats

I just found this thread buried deep, I can't believe there are no more comments on this, especially from UK peeps. It's quite freely available in the UK mainly from hairdressing suppliers. It's an EPA registered hospital disinfectant, that's suitable to use with metal/plastic, obviously the major problem with most methods is that they rust stuff up bad, this doesn't. I love it, and it's a great alternative to all of the hard to get hold of disinfectants mentioned on here normally.

This used to be the go-to stuff in the days of set up machines in test tube racks and paying extra for new needles....
