First time using charcoals, spent the night on it. A3

I just bought some colored paper so I can work with charcoal myself, looks really good Monk! If I have one super minor crit is that in this newest piece the hip area could use a bit of form definition and maybe stronger shadows since it feels kind of flat and kind of distracts me (mostly the innermost area of her left leg), but that may just be the scan or whatever. Really hard to get nice pics of charcoal where all the values show up. Anyway ten points and a parrot sticker to you :).

ha cheers man! you could be right! I did specifically leave that whole area pretty negative and flat as a perception thing.

The upper (and closer) half of her body, such as the arm and face are a few shades lighter. The face having highlights to enhance it and a shade or two from the arm if that makes sense, so it was all deliberate

thats not to say that I am right though haha. I am just experimenting with tones and contrast. so I can apply them to my tattoos. :)

Just looked up a video about composition and just noticed that for me the focal point of the piece becomes the hip area because it's surrounded by strong contrast and because it's relatively flat (also those suggestion lines from the arm and the legs, maybe even because the pubic mound repeats the triagle shape of the elbow). The piece definitely flows well and if it was intentional it's definitely well done, haha. Usually in these kind of pieces the focal point is usually meant to be the face so I figured it might be at least somewhat helpful to mention how I see the piece. Studying the pics also makes me take notice of the structures and composition which I have loads of trouble with myself. But really seeing well made charcoal drawing like this gave me a nice boost to start working on some for my portfolio today, so cheers! :)

ha well as I said, it was an experiment for me for those reasons, but you have brought up new things to bring to attention and focus on. :P But thats the never ending game we play right? :P

Thanks for the feedback!

Looking forward to seeing these charcoals

another. Different paper. Different colour. harder to blend on, and ended up a bit more grainy

I think I'm finally getting the hang of things. Hopefully I can start working on some bigger pieces next week.
