This site is not a substitute for a professional apprenticeship with a licensed tattoo studio. Nor is this site a definitive source for learning the art or trade of tattooing. An apprenticeship is the ONLY universally accepted way to learn proper safety practices and sound technique.
While we welcome members of all levels, we STRONGLY advocate staying away from skin until you've received formal training from someone who works in the field. Hell, even hair stylists must complete over a year of courses, pass a state health board exam, and apprentice under a professional studio before earning a chair.
The trade of tattooing has a rich history and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you respect the art, please show your respects by learning the right way.

I would recommend using a 7-9 round liner then use a 9 needle mag for the coloring. For sharp tips i use a mag for the lining i tilt the mag so the needles come close to a vertical position. This is hard though its all about angle so if your a beginner and just do simple tribal stick to rounds. But try different shit see what works for you and if it comes out nice tell me.

Def. dont use mags right now. Stay with rounds and learn your way through that. Mags can really fuck skin up bad without practice and alot of knowledge from the other basic needles..

I think you should use liners for your outlines...obviously...then rounds for your filling in.....the needle size depends on the size of the tattoo...the bigger the tattoo the bigger needle groupings you need....but 5 needle groupings are probably best to start with..also when you are filling in..if you can't get right up to your outline..get as near as you can with the shader then go back to your liner to fill in any gaps near the edge...you can get more accuracy with a liner.....especially to the points on tribal.
hope this helps -------------------- The Inca

hey man, i thought the same thing... that mags are sounding kinda scary, i fucked my skin up the first time i used them, you just gotta set them right in the tube, and turn your voltage down low, that way its not as strong of a punch into your skin, then just make sure your not going to deep, or to fast... and you should be alright, there not bad once you get the hang of them

I am having a hard time getting color to stay in with round shaders. I used a 7 flat to do all the coloring on my koi in the show and tell.

Take it slow. There's no need to rush. You might have to press a little harder because it is on yourself. Trust me when it comes to tattooing yourself. I have several that are on my forearm and on my hand that I had to say "Holy hot damn!" but I had to keep trekking because it was on myself.
I would not suggest you tattoo anything from your thumb down to your palm bacause you will feel things you never felt before. -------------------- "You open up your arms and then you get down on your knees. check it out wuu you can use your liner for the out side edge. where you want a nice line that won't go out side of your tribal line, but using a liner to shade or colour is just painful for yourself or somebody else

I tattooed the letters PBSNPP on the inside of my pinky... and at first it was like... whoa.. that kinda tingles.. then it burned for a few seconds... and now its fine... i mean... its nothing fancy.. just the letters on it but i keep forgetting its there cause i dont feel it at all >.< -------------------- |
