Here is where you should work. Get an area that you know no one will mess with; it has to be your area no outside interference. No friends, animals, parents, kids anybody. This is your area for one thing, tattooing.

Get a table or what I use, a salon station this is used for tattoos only, no eating, drawing or anything else. This is your dirty area


Make sure to work over a nonporous floor like tile or linoleum. You need to be able to clean up any spills or drips or ink drips from filling caps. Stay away from wood floors or carpet. Working in the garage is better then over carpet.

Never have clients rest on anything cloth or porous, like arms of chairs or over couches. Regardless if you place a towel or plastic barrier, I do not recommended it. If you are going to have some one lay I suggest getting a massage table with a vinyl top that can be washed with bleach and alcohol.

If you decided to have an autoclave and ultrasonic cleaner you need a sink dedicated for that, that will not be used for eating or washing anything but tubes. You should be the only one with access to it.

Hey, great post mark! Very clear outline on how to set up your work area...one question, My room meets all the sanitation criteria except i'm working over wood flooring. I clean the floor after every tattoo and weekly if i'm not tattooing. Is this alright or must I move? thanks in advance

just be extra careful. Get one of those plastic office covers for chairs to roll around on carpet and keep it under the client area. you'll be able to clean it.

Do a google search for them, they run between 65- 200 dollars. They have a ton of drawers and shelves. You can get a large art case at any art store that have shelves and compartments for you to organize stuff. I don't recommend traveling with stuff too much it's a hassle to bring everything with you place to place

Hey kit-kat if you know someone that is a licensed hair dresser they usually get discounts at salon supply stores.

I use a 5 drawer roll-away tool box.  I got it unused in trade for a tattoo.  For carrying my equipment, I bought a pistol case.  Everything fits really well.

Great post! I went and re-aranged my workspace after reading this. A bit of info before questions: I have 'aquired' a stainless steel bench and stainless containers from McDonalds for my work area, the bench is fairly long and has three tiers.
Couple of questions for you:
1) I'm a bit undecided as to where to keep my sharps bin, like how close to the work area, what sort of control measures to take re:CC and BBP, should I still clean everyhting that goes in there to further reduce any risk etc.

2) At the moment I'm not able to set up my autoclave in a seperate room due to power point shortages in my house, mainly due to needing a step down converter for the autoclve, ultrasonic and other stuff in the same room. Is it ok to set up and run the autoclave on my stainless bench after i have completed my clean up? I always wipe down the autoclave my germacidal wipes before putting it on the bench.

you should keep it all seperate when it comes to dirty stuff. Your sharps and especially your ultrasound should be no where near your work area or human contact.

In California you have the right to go see the back room and see if it's clean. that just lets people see without going into that area.
