So, most of us must know these series. And every one has an opinion about it. I personally think everything that I see even remotely connectible to tattooing is worth watching. So are these INK series. These series are mostly based on scripted events, meaning the customers call the shop or the TV company, and than they decide on the story of the customer if its interesting for the show. So we know some of it is fake, but the stories are real and the most important thing, the tattoos are real. I have still, like most of the users on our forum, a lot to learn. I'm not even close to where they are skill wise.
I'm not interested in what you think there sexual interests are, or if you think they are sellouts. I can read enough of that on other sites. I hope we are dealing with a more grown up group of people. but I am interested in who you think are good, and why. What do you like about their styles. What inspires you in these series. Do you think you can learn from these series. And please keep it on the constructive side. -------------------- honor loyalty respect |

i saw Guy Aitchison (Ledgend) on LA Ink a few days ago. so i stuck around and watched but most times when i flick it on its more like a soap opera than a tattoo show, i found Tattoo Wars to be a more enjoyable show

It's a good people watch, seeing the different approaches and motivations. Louis seems to want fame and fortune whereas Dan seems to treat it as asocial event. Ami, like louis, sees it like a business nunez is like Dan in for the social life. The Butchers sleeve louis did was incredible. The two series have done wonders for the tattoo business. However it encouraged a lot of messers to try thier hand, thinking that looks easy and well paid, I'll have some of that!

I just enjoy watching them work and checking the finished product. Checking out their technique. Other than that, i can't watch that crap.

I think Cory Miller from LA Ink is such a great artist and a well rounded person. He's the only reason I watch it.

Chris Garver is Badass.
Corey Miller is a legend in his own time. Kat, as obnoxious as she can seem, is a great tattoo artist. Even if some of these guys are sub par tattooists, I don't know shit right now, and I can only hope to be as good as any of the artists on those shows. I Tivo the shows and fast forward to the tattooing sections. Then rewind and watch the tattooing process again. The actual episodes I could care less about. I do wish though, that the shows didn't exist, as they've glorified the profession. I'm afraid the industry will become so saturated with tattooers, we will become as common as hair dressers. That's very sad. -------------------- |

I watch the show whenever I can. They are great entertainment. I can't say I've learned anything from these shows, except maybe some things NOT to do. I've learned WAY more from this site. But, at least there is some programming on dedicated to us.
Do they inspire? Absolutely. Unfortunately, while it drives some of us to draw and practice the right way, it also makes others buy a cheap chinese tattoo kit off ebay and start hammering away out back in the tool shed. If you get past the little sob stories and soap opera tributes, and focus on the art, they're fun to watch. -------------------- Tattooing.................what else is there?

Thanks, for all the reactions. I agree with most of the comments, I'm not too worried about more people getting into tattooing. It's a long road to get even close to being a pro. And for these people buying the Chinese eBay kits, it's a cheap way to find out it is, or is not something for you.
For the series, I think most of the gals are much better at coloring than the guys. I have not seen London ink yet. They just started airing here in Holland. Thanks again, and keep 'm coming! This post has been edited by JST: Jan 31 2009, 04:04 AM -------------------- honor loyalty respect |

I love Hannah Aitchison's work.... amazing stuff. Corey Miller also rocks out some sick pieces. Chris Garver and Tim Hendricks the only artists on Miami Ink that I would rate and I don't like London Ink at all...

I really wish they would spend more time cleaning up Kat's lack of CC habbits... Seriously the amount of things she does wrong CC wise is staggering...

Yeah, I just saw the first episode of Londen ink. They have a completely different format. The focus is less on the customer. And most of the artists are borring my eyes out of my skull! Hopefully they'll change that.
On the otherhand it's way less glamorous, than the other two. But that could be the only thing going for it. -------------------- honor loyalty respect |

The first ink show I saw was miami ink and I have to say Chris Garver always held my attention. His traditional and asian style tattoos are awesome!! Same thing with Corey Miller on La Ink and he's fuckin' hilarious...tells it jus like it is. Hannah Aitchison knows her color wheel like no other and can really make just about anything pop n flow n also an Illinois native. WOoT! Seeing incredible work from anyone gives me drive to do my best on whatever i'm working on even if its an area i'm not so good in.

I must say I watch these programmes just so I can absorb everything I can about the art, the soap opera interventions are a pain in the arse and to my mind should be reduced.
You can pick bits and pieces up though if you look hard enough, small tips on freehand technique for instance, Garver tends to talk about the more technical side of things evey now and then and these snippets can be invaluable. Kats series I think is a pile of shite simply because it does concentrate on the politics and crap rather than the tattooing, however Corey and Hannah are the real stars of this show, even to the point where Corey hinted at his not too angelic past when he rigged up a prison style power supply out of virtually nothing in order to continue tattooing during a power cut!!!! London Ink is a different ball game because the shop is not their primary business, they all work for other shops or for themselves, I think Louie ought to take a broader minded approach and stop with this snobbery he seems to be obsessed with. All in all though I think it's good to have them there on the box, after all there's no such thing as bad publicity eh!!! -------------------- Diggaz666

I've Netflix'd both Miami and LA and can never seem to get enough. Though I could go for less of the drama/soap opera and load up more on scenes of the artists actually working.
I also like that LA is a female dominant shop, it's quite refreshing to see. I love the work that Kim Saigh does and I really dig her energy. -------------------- A tattoo is no more permanent than I am -a.d.

I watch them simply `cos they are about tattooing.......... most of it is scripted bollox, but sometimes there are some little gems in there.
Ami`s protrait of a chihauha..... that looked like it has been shot in the head and healed up ! Chris Garver`s Panther tattoo....... FUCKIN` AWESOME !!! Cory Miller`s accuracy.......... True to the bone. To be honest, the rest I can leave alone... can`t stand Eastenders, Emmerdale and the likes.... soaps aint my thing !! -------------------- Sometimes the reality of a situation can be so surreal that it`s unreal !!

I think Kat is a very beautiful woman and I think that, at least from my untrained perspective, she does amazing portraits.
As for Miami, I really like Darren Brass even though he mostly does lettering and I like Chris Garver of course, he is amazing. I've only ever once watched LA Ink and never London but I watched a lot of Miami Ink and I also watched the other one at first....can't remember the name, had Hart and Huntington on it. Anyway, it sucked. At any rate, I had a tattoo before I watched Miami Ink but I have to admit, that was the first real look at the creative process behind tattoos that I ever got to see and so, in some ways it has indeed inspired me. |

These series' have some good artists.. and some not so good ones..
Chris Garver, Tim Hendricks, Corey Miller, Hannah Aitchison, Kim Saigh, and Phil Kyle are all great at what they do.. and seem to have their heads on straight as to why they tattoo.. the rest of them .. meh. I personally believe that Kat has a show simply because of the level of drama she brings to the table.. and the fact that she is an "attractive woman".. all the artists in her shop can tattoo circles around her.. and while she is a proficient portrait artist.. she is by no means anywhere near the top of the food chain in that style.. I've seen a couple of her tattoos healed, and they aren't great. Ami is all about the money, as well as Nunez.. and Louis is all about buying new suits. |

It's all a load of old bollox but I still watch it. The longer the programmes go on the less tattooing they seem to show! They do feature some top notch artists though I just wish they'd show a bit more of the tattoo process and techniques.
