personanlly i would get to the docs and get it treated before the tattoo cover up. i wouldnt tattoo your fella because of it! once its gone then yes

So Jason: Your usual tattoo artist wouldn't work on you because you had an infection? Did you know it was staph at that time? Personally, I'm new at this whole staph thing.... My own dilemma: My boyfriend suspects having a recurring staph infection (he's an MMA fighter, where it's common) this time on his jaw area. If my boyfriend really needs a cover-up job (of an offensive symbol) on his stomach, what do you suggest he do? Should he hold off with the cover-up tat & just go to the ER already? Should you not get any type of tattoo or piercing if you suspect already having staph? Will this put other people in harm's way, etc? I'm totally clueless about this issue, & this seems like the best place to find out. I really appreciate any info you can offer... Thanks! He needs to go see his doctor about that. I know MMA sports don't have a set season so he wouldn't have traditional down time from training, working or fighting. He will need to wait till his tattoo is completely healed before getting in that dirty ass ring with another bleeding sweating guy. -------------------- |

This may sound a bit redundant as I'm sure none (or very few) people on here have a phd, but does anyone know if I clean the tattoo area with a antibacterial disinfectant wipe prior to working on it will this help prevent a staph infection?

Is cleaning the skin area with Green Soap enough to prevent Straph infection?
I also use an antiseptic called "Dettol" to clean the skin and to print the design. Its ingredients: - PINE OIL - ISOPROPYLC ALCOHOL - CHLOROXYLENOL (4-CHLORO-3, 5-XYLENOL) Does this do the job (I use both, one after the other, just to be sure)? |

The wipes I'm referring to are used to clean the skin after an abrasion. They're specifically designed to be used to clean the wound of bacteria. My mum used to use Dettol dabbed onto a cloth when we were kids for the same thing. I shaded the rim of my Rolling Stone's tongue in with Intenze black ink. I gouged a few spots pretty good and I couldn't understand why this happened because I did even thicker shading just below this tatt and that one healed just fine, no gouging. I can't figure out why, but maybe the voltage setting had something to do with it? if you hammer the needle harder are you prone to getting gouged?
The area around the tatty that got gouged also broke out in tiny red pimples which went away in a day or so. My girlfriend says that they were from shaving. I was in some pain and the redness around the tatty led me to believe that it too was infected like Jason's. No sign of honeycombing but definately red and painjful. I will heal with time and if the honeycombs start dripping with ooze I will go to the croker. so i was tattooed last friday, (leg) had no complications on saturday, but woke up on sunday unable to walk. i knew the pain was unnecessary because i had had my other leg done 3 wks ago with no problems. i had followed my aftercare as usual, and had kept my leg properly elevated. i tried adding a dab of neosporin to it yesterday, and it bubbled and got this gross slimy sheen to it. i freaked out and ran it under lukewarm water to rinse off the oinment and my ink physically started to "wash" off. after it dried though, it went back to looking dull and "greeny". i went into urgent care this morning and found out what i had suspected, i had contracted a staph infection, but my doctor said that its not uncommon to have a "dry" infection without pustules or honeycombs but even if its just intense pain and heat, to still have it checked asap because a strain of MRSA is going around and can be very harmfull and hard to treat.
what sucks is you can catch this anywhere, my fiancee may have brought it home from visiting his grandma at the hospital, or when we went shopping ect... i'm posting some pics in case anyone thinks they may have staph. the first one is pre-infection, the rest are post infection. i will also post more when its healed. i was given a prescription for antibiotics, told to stay home for 2-3 days while the culture for MRSA processed, keep the tattoo dry, and to keep my leg elevated as much as possible. edit: guess you cant tell much from the photos, too tiny of a load size:) This post has been edited by jenny612: Nov 26 2007, 02:48 PM

i have seen this before and i find it happens in the bends of the body more however my wife had one on her leg, we're pretty sure its cause she was caking on the cream so the air couldn't get at it, since then i make sure to tell people to rub it in like suntan lotion and only apply a little at a time and let the air get at it cause air is a tatttooo's best friend, my brother in laws look'd as bad as yours jason and it went away on its own
