After spending the entire morning dicking around re-drafting and trying to perfect a tiny detail in a drawing, only to end up back with the original version I drew, I'm reminded of one of my big personal rules, which is to stick as close to the original sketch as possible.

The main reason for this is to keep the energy and spontaneity from when the lines first flowed out of you, uninhibited by self-criticism. Too many re-workings can leave a design looking dead and forced.

Also, the initial sketch is often closest to what feels true to your instincts and abilities, therefore making it easier to do well, and convincingly.

That's how it is for me anyway; thought it might be worth sharing.

Right, back to the drawing board, now that I can get on with painting this thing finally!

I prefer to thumbnail everything I do. I can pump out anywhere from three to twenty rough but detailed thumbs and see where that takes me. More often than not, I'll end up going with an amalgam of all the finer points. But I've also done numerous thumbs just to go with something completely different for the actual piece. But that's just me.
