> This site is no substitute for a formal apprenticeship

This site is not a substitute for a professional apprenticeship with a licensed tattoo studio. Nor is this site a definitive source for learning the art or trade of tattooing. An apprenticeship is the ONLY universally accepted way to learn proper safety practices and sound technique.

While we welcome members of all levels, we STRONGLY advocate staying away from skin until you've received formal training from someone who works in the field. Hell, even hair stylists must complete over a year of courses, pass a state health board exam, and apprentice under a professional studio before earning a chair.

The trade of tattooing has a rich history and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you respect the art, please show your respects by learning the right way.

I have done quite a few tattoos, but unfortunately they were mostly all on dark skinned people and mostly all letters not involving shading, therefore my real ability was never made clear. I have some doubts on my skills for shading however, and some questions. I have been only using 7mag curved for shading, and have never tried the round shaders. I went today and bought a 14 round shader and an 18 round shader. Will they work out with my 10 or 12 wrap coils just fine? And... which do you prefer?? I want a very smooth effect of course, looking into doing some clouds and other things.
Thank you for any help.

ive done alot of tattoos using round shaders and they turned out nice, but you have to make circles really fast to avoid too much trauma to the skin. Best advice is to learn how to use mags. I finaly did and I work alot quicker with shades now. Next thing I found out is to make my greywash . I used to just delute black ink with steril water. One cup with pure black, second 50/50 ink and water and so on til total of four cups. One after another with larger amount of water until the fifth containing only water. Now I use water with greensoap for delution, from the same bottle I use to wipe color from tattoo when working. I found the shading turned out much more smooth and color look more grey right after putting it into the skin than from using just steril water for greywash.
