ive noticed of late that needle depth is starting to mess me up - mainly in areas where the sin is thinner - i usually ride the tip- but lately ive started to ride the needle as i can see where im going better - get better detail and i dont get the big pool of ink that makes a huuge mess lol on the thicker parts - outer arms legs - back etc i usually go in about a mill - but i did a piece on my wrist using the same depth and it scared up a bit - obviously when it comes to hitting a design on another persons skin i dont want this happnin how do i determine how deep im gonna need to go in without going too deep and messing up?

If you're scarring up lines on more delicate skin then I'd say you maybe need to look at your machine setup, voltage and hand speed.

if using the proper amount of vas or whatever ointment u use the ink shoild puddle but dabbing it up should be no problem .... ide suggest riding the tube as it gives u a constant and even depth to all lines ...
i would love to ride the needle but at this point im not even close to ready ... -------------------- www.inkedbythenerd.com swallowsndaggers tattoo forum Swallows and Daggers Support The Traditional Movement Tattoo Artist, Painter, Asshole and Machine Collector |

I don't think the rest of your numbers would help really. Everyone's machines run different. All I meant really was that if you know you're working on a more delicate area then maybe look at other aspects of your machine rather than just your depth... like turn the volts down a bit so it hits softer.

the scarring was riding the tube - i started riding the needle last tattoo i did and it looks to be healing great - just the thin skinned areas i have had trouble with but that was riding tube - set up the same as i do for other tattoos with roughly 1 - 1.5mm hang

Yeah,
.... sounds more like Johnny saying. (Taking into consideration that all machines are different)......12v sounds a lil high for lining unless you're pushing a heavy group with 8 wraps or something. ..... I don't think there's any shame in "tubing". ...I ride it unless I'm on detail...makes for nice lines. Wrist, tops of hands & feet, parts of the neck and head are very thin on certin people. I would not try these areas with out seeing how deep my needle is going because I must adjust on the fly. You can blow out & scare really easy in places like these, sometimes I scratch in a line in these places & sculpt to my liking.

When putting names on fingers, I try and feel the depth of the needle, I hang it out a good 2-4mm dip in the ink and do one letter at a time, I can't see any other way to do it...and I use a trusted $4 (£2.20) machine to carry it out, each to there own....Peace out,P.
PS..With a 5rl in a 3v tube.Sometimes even a wee 3rl........Ouch. This post has been edited by Nippyneedle: Nov 7 2009, 05:47 PM -------------------- C'MON THE HOOPS IN 2010,

i think its just mastering the depth your going - im getting used to it now and it makes it a lot easier - can see exactly where im going - dont got ink everywhere - little details and small pieces are easier cos i can see wher the needle is - i think riding the tube is more like welding - you got a big pool and trying your hrdest to stay in the middle of that
