Here at the Trails, we are pleased to announce that the good folks at Painful Pleasures are sponsoring a design contest to create a banner for use on this site! www.painfulpleasures.com carries everything you'd want from Inks (Mom's, Intenze, Starbrite, Skin Candy, and Kuro Sumi) to disposable needles and tubes and more. There will be a $100 1st prize, $50 2nd prize , and $25 3rd prize awarded in a credit towards any tattoo supplies from their site.

Here's the official rules:

  • Must be based on "tattoo art/flash"
  • Must contain the words "Painful Pleasures" and "Quality Tattoo Supplies." The text DOES NOT have to be hand drawn (you may use Photoshop for fonts if you like).
  • Entries must be submitted in a final size of width of between 468 pixels x height of 60 pixels to 728px × 90px at a resolution of 72 DPI (dots/inch)
  • Artwork MUST be ORIGINAL and drawn by YOU!
  • Each member may submit only ONE entry
  • Pencil, Pen, Ink, Crayon, Paints, watercolor etc...
  • NO Digital images (you may and should use Photoshop to crop you image and/or modify your art for the size requirements)
  • Entries must be submitted by August 1st 12AM PST.
  • Entries will be voted on by members and voting will end on August 4th at 5pm PST. Winners will be announced the following day.
  • Please post entries in this post.
  • All participating members grant Ink Trails and Painful Pleasures the exclusive right to unlimited use of their banner design as well as the right edit and/or modify at our discretion.

I'd encourage everyone to be creative. You can create an entire flash design and crop it in Photoshop so that only a thin use only a portion of your design (60 pixels tall is not a ton of space!). Again, Photoshop CAN be used so long as the basis of your submission is original artwork drawn by YOU! Have fun and good luck to everyone!

I really hate to tell you guys this, but $100 dollars in waaaaaay cheap. Think, they are going to turn around and make thousands off of your artwork, and you get $100 dollars, and no rights to your artwork after that. The reason websites have contests like this is to scam unsuspecting people into drawing a banner for them that otherwise they would have to pay at LEAST $500 for if they were going through any design agency. So basically, they are fucking people.

Actually, I contacted them and asked if they'd be interested in sponsoring a contest, as all the banners they have speak to the piercing demographic and not the tattoo supply side. They were gracious enough to offer up a prize. You can reuse your design as you like, this just prevents someone from asking for the banner to be removed once a prize is awarded. I contacted them in an attempt to create a contest with prizes. I actually resent the fact that you would accuse them or me of "scamming" anyone. We are not going to own the rights to anything other than the banner, which will be used on this site.

I could have easily asked one of the artists that I like on the site to design a banner design and offered them compensation, but I thought it would be fun to open it up to the entire membership base. Maybe that was my mistake. Funny thing was prior to this post I was thinking of adding my own money and adding a Forgiven, Monkeyrat, or seeker machine to sweeten the pot. Nix that.

Dont get pissed with one persons comment please, there are others that are genuinely interested in the competition and see the challenge as being one that they can use to grow, personally I think its great,, that plus the fact that Muppets agreed to help me sort out the teccy side means that I for one get to learn at least a handful of things from it before i even get close to posting a picture up that can be judged by others.. I feel fer ya gettin so pissed,, but its a great site here,, and the majority of people appreciate that.. even if sometimes stuff comes accross the wrong way.

Smile? sad.gif please?? unsure.gif

Seriously I would enter even if there wasn't a monetary prize......imagine seeing your artwork EVERY time you came here......it's be awesome - the credit towards tattoo supplies is just an added bonus.....and every little helps! biggrin.gif

Don't fancy changing your mind about the forgiven/seeker/monkeyrat thing do ya? wink.gif tongue.gif

$100 bucks for a banner is more than adequate compensation if it were looked at from a purely business standpoint. $500 bucks for a banner? this isn't the rape and pillage days of the early dot com boom, dozens of people would gladly create a quality banner for a hundred bucks.... probably less if you posted on craigslist. the world is full of starving graphic designers.

Seriously, I'm just glad for a paying
contest!
Let's just do what we do, draw something up,
post it on the forum, and hope we don't come in
last place.
And as a bonus, you stand a chance
to get free tattoo supplies. If you think it's a scam
or a crock, that don't enter the contest! Period.

Okay, if you contacted them, that's all good then. Go ahead with the contest, I thought they had contacted YOU. If they had, it actually would have been a different story.

P.S. just to clarify the only digital element allowed is the text, right?

I dont see how it matters. Its like anything else, if its worth it to you, do it, if not, dont... This wont be everyones cup of tea, thats fine. But why try to tear down something positive that obviously alot of people on here are down with?
I for one appreciate Jason taking the time to motivate and push the community to keep drawing, designing, creating, etc. Even if there was zero compensation... alot of people would just be stoked with being a part of it, and maybe even winning and seeing their art be used on a site for thousands to see. Its all about perspective.

Supernummy don't take any of this the wrong way... we don't know what happened to you and how bad it was for you, so just look at it from other peoples side too. I for one am glad that you said your piece that made everyone put the whole deal on the table so everyone knows what they are getting into. Heck, most around here could careless about the money its just an excuse to try a little harder. The bragging rights will be worth more then anything lol. Later
