> This site is no substitute for a formal apprenticeship

This site is not a substitute for a professional apprenticeship with a licensed tattoo studio. Nor is this site a definitive source for learning the art or trade of tattooing. An apprenticeship is the ONLY universally accepted way to learn proper safety practices and sound technique.

While we welcome members of all levels, we STRONGLY advocate staying away from skin until you've received formal training from someone who works in the field. Hell, even hair stylists must complete over a year of courses, pass a state health board exam, and apprentice under a professional studio before earning a chair.

The trade of tattooing has a rich history and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you respect the art, please show your respects by learning the right way.

So I'm feeling pretty stupid all around these days. For having spent so much time as an apprentice and not being able to answer this question for myself, and for spending so much time at a shop in the hopes that if I was patient, I would get more machine time and eventually the shop would have more artists that I could turn to with questions like this - since my "mentor" spent most days playing xbox at the shop.

SO, I'm having some problems with my machine - never used it before, always used his. It runs beautifully and smooth at a slow voltage.. for about 5 minutes, then it randomly stops, crank the voltage, works again, for a minute, then stops. After about 10 minutes the coils were on fire. I tried switching up the clip cord, checked bands, etc. I could get it to go for a second by manually pulling down on the armature bar but as soon as I let off the foot pedal it's done again. If I crank it to an extreme voltage it will go, but it's jackhammering at that point. I'm pretty sure it's not the power source, its an eikon ems 300. The first time I ever hooked up the liner It was to some crappy PSU and it had to be cranked to an extreme voltage, spitting sparks, etc and I was told to invest in a better PSU, but not I think there must be something else that I'm missing.

I just wanted to see if anyone could think of any possible causes for this besides the machine itself - I dont want to waste the builders time if it is something I am doing, obviously. Thanks guys

spent a day on them both trying to tune them, thought i had them nailed but when i tattooed with them today they were pretty bad. had to change back to my old machines. just seems not fair to me after shelling out 400usd on something i was promised to run like a dream, straight out of the box.

both thoes frames are not ideal for a cutback setup, if i were you id be trying to set them up as traditional shaders/color packers.

these pics dont show it , but ive seen pics of both sides of the frames, the holes for the front binders are slotted like this one

they can be made cut backs but itll take new springs & moving the binders both simple shit

i thought they would be able to slot back just didnt look like there would be room for front binder contact screw and clearance for a spring if pushed back.
you can see where the slot ends just over the center of the front coil, pushed that far back i dont think would make a very nice cutback.
could be wrong, probably am wrong

maybe its just my opinion, but i find that for a cutback, the front binder sitting over the front coil core is great, & the spring/binder issue wouldnt be a problem with less angle on the spring
ps aufwe, sorry bout jackin the thread
