Well I'm Josh. Very skill in drawing and art. Though many tattoo artist friends told me.. i can be one bad ass artist (pen and pencil) but can suck alot in tattooing. Well i took the chance because i love tattoo and feel like i can put my talents on somthing great and share my art onto people and enjoy it. Today is the 10th of july and i just finished purchasing my tattoo kit from a great friend of minez that a tatto artist that just started and got recruited to a tattoo shop. So she sold me her old Kit. 1 month old.. Two machines.. caps, power supply, foot pedal, ink, needles and tubes. bout everything i need. :D so im pretty excited lol.. She told me buy pig skin.. was closed today -.- but said ppl use melons to start... told me to practice on holding the machine and making stright lines and circles.. I'm glad i found this site.. to get some pointers... i already tried the whole trying to find a mentor to teach me... no luck, everyone is too busy including my friend.
So where do i start.. when will i know im ready. what best to use to practice instead a person. (don't want to stab someone to death) very very new to this.. i read and looked up. but now that its in my hand.. its totally different.. hope to meet alot of people and chat and share tips and ideas... thanks |

Put a pen or pencil in the tube vice and practice drawing with the machine running to help build hand strength.practice doing lines and circles on pigskin and fruit to make sure that you get accustomed to the weight of the machine. During that time read every post you can on here and when you start to feel comfortable with the fruit and pigskin, practice on your leg. Then post a picture so everyone can give you advice and go back to the fruit and practice with the advice everyone gives you.

One thing you are going to notice (or may have read here) is that your hand IS going to shake when you start tattooing. If not becuase of your nerves, because your hand muscles will be underdeveloped, and/or from trying to draw at goofy angles on contours.

Welcome sikk,
About the hand shakes. It happens to EVERYONE Ive talked to. Im a pretty big guy (6'2" 250 lbs.), played football for 18 years, up to the Semi Pro level. My hand still shook. Youre using different muscles. As far as practicing tattooing, grab a bag of oranges and go nuts. You can buy "practice skins" (IMO they suck for anything except lining), pig skin, melons, camping mats, friends, street people. Read all the back posts, soak in as much as you can, it;s all there for the taking. And keep asking questions that you cant find answers for. Another thing to remember is that grips come in different sizes.
I know that sounds obvious, but I suffered from cramping when I first started (OK, so that wasn't too long ago!), but when I got a 1" grip I found it suited me far better. Later discovered it was cos I use a right hand machine when I'm southpaw, but if you are struggling, try different grips. Don't go out & buy expensive inks for your practice skins/fruit work cos you only want to get used to the machine in your hands & you'll waste money on good ink. Read up on how to set up your machines & if you're gonna colour fill on the fake skins remember small overlapping circles. It's all too easy to put some ink in, wipe it & notice that very little ink has actually taken then go over it several times until it's filled. If you do this on real skin you'll end up with hamburger meat, so get into good habits even on the fake stuff. Anyways most of this stuff is on here some where so if you're stuck happy hunting or just ask!! -------------------- "In this truck is a man whose latent genius, if unleashed, would rock the nation, whose dynamic energy would overpower those around him. Wow. Thanks a lot guys.. I really feel welcome lol .. And all the advice will sink in.. As soon as I get my pig skin I'l post pictures of my progress.. I been useing to diffrent gribs I have and it does help a lot adjusting to them.
Another quesition I had is... u can only go once over the person till skin heals right? Also ... how does the whole diffrent shading work? From darker to lighter? And stuff? Does it have to do if u go in deeper? That's my other concern.... what is too deep to hurt a person. The girl showed me where to have the needle when setting machine up. But from that little point everything goes in or half? Cause I read a lot if u don't go deep enough.. Skin will peel as we'll ink won't stay and u end up with a ugly tattoo. Waiting to heal and be retouched... |

OK. When you fill, you go in small circles that overlap so you shouldn't need to go over it again. However in reality you'll have gaps. So you can go over it again, but use you best judgement.
Shading comes in various forms. Whip shading is where you start at one point & whip the needle along & out. Another way of shading is to start off light & build up in contrast, but again be careful as to no overwork the skin. Go here http://www.tattoobox.co.uk/downloads.htm & thank Tattoobox for putting up these videos for us to download. They give real good info that you can see on greyshading & tattooing in general. As for going in deep, again be careful or you'll get blow outs (where the ink spreads in the skin). There is loads of good reading about this in the most requested forum. I'd advise to read as much as you can about it & practice as much as you can before hitting the real skin. -------------------- "In this truck is a man whose latent genius, if unleashed, would rock the nation, whose dynamic energy would overpower those around him. Josh, rather than inserting a link to those pages, simply highlight the URL and click "Insert Image." Then people won't have to leave the site to see your work.
