Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am considering upgrading and replacing the existing forum software with a more robust board solution. I wanted some feedback. With the new software (IPB), you would be able to do the following:

1. create and host galleries of your own photos like a personal portfolio
2. There is an add on feature to give every member their own Blog (been requested by members)

In addition, the new software has a modification that wold help resolve the Search Engine indexing issues I've been combating.

You can read about the features here: http://www.invisionboard.com/
and see what the default forum skin looks like here: http://forums.invisionpower.com/

They have a converter for the SMF software I am currently running, and they maintain that they can convert all users accounts, threads, and attachments over seamlessly. However, that being said, there may be some glitches, and a learning curve for everyone to get used to the new interface. Plus it'll cost me some serious money. What's your thoughts?

I would say do it.  As far as the money issue goes, check out my post about the members items.

Jason,

this is the BEST idea you had so far :D

the upgrade will give you guys soooo many avenues to play with and tweat to make this site really come alive.

Granted there are always people that will get lost in the shuffel. due to the fear of change and what not. but the benifits are WAY greater then the risks of losing a few non regualr members I believe..  your regulars arnt going anywhere anytime sooon :D
(my way of telling you your stuck with me ;D

but yes I say go for it..

Will there be a membership fee?

just curious.. even if so its worth it Id say.

by the way.. I have a SHIT load of smilies for when/if you upgrade..  some a wicked cool..  (the smilies avaliable now are LAME)

Say Jason, have you checked into http://www.bravenet.com/ ?  They seem to be A LOT  cheaper and I'm sure they can fit your needs.

Sounds cool I would do it.  Even though right now I do not have the material to make use of the new features.  The gallery and blog would be great to have when I do.

obviously, im only one person. i like how this forum is set up more than the other is. the features you mentioned aren't really things worth paying alot for... i mean, anyone can get a photobucket for free, or even a myspace.. you can blog on myspace and upload pictures all for the low low price of nothing.

i do like the idea of having it available right here... but if its going to cost you, i dont think its worth it really. i dont dislike the idea at all. i dont mind change or anything...also, i would probably pay to keep my account if needed, or buy some merch of some sort. i have a feeling most people who actually use the site wouldnt mind paying a bit to keep it going.

just my 2 cents. i understand how complicated getting new stuff set up can be, so if i were you i would really focus on whats good and bad and see if its worth it for you to go through the work.

i love this place either way!

Honestly... regardless of the cost...  you have a awsome forum going on.. with an AWSOME concept behind it.. but simple machines forum software is very limited in what you can do with it..

I honestly think that when you upgrade to the new software you are going to see an AMAZING response...

you have created a website that has a BUNCH or potential.. I mean it could become ALOT more then what it is now..

My philosophy has always been is if ain't broke, don't fix it (actually it's "if it ain't broke, break it", but that doesn't make my point here!).

I agree with that for the most part.. but forums generate NO money unless there are LOTS of people using them.. in which case Jason could start selling advertising space and help pay off the site, server space as well as make some extra cash..

dont get me wrong I love this site.. and think is great!

Shit Ive made more posts on this site in the last month that I have on my own..

I really think adsense offer very poor ads in terms of relevancy. I'd rather strike a deal with specific vendors I think have a valuable service to offer users of the site.

I use adsense on my site as well..  For the most part it really isnt a whole lot of revenue but its better then nothing.. I have my adds for adsense placed at the very bottom of the pages so they are un noticable.. out of sight out of mind..  adsense alone pays for my 10 gig server space! and that NO clicks just page impressions...

I also have specific sponsors.. but alot of their contributon comes in form of prizes that I give away monthly in  of contests for the members....
