Finally, these are a couple of pieces out of what I affectionately call my "skribbles" book, that I have on me at almost all times. First, we have a diemond/sacred heart/ sparkly thingys piece, then a sugar skull inspired by the John Lennon song "Working Class Hero" with an attempt at a gypsy-style motif on the paddy cap, and my first shot at a gypsy profile with a peacock worked in.
   Again, any and all comments/advice are appreciated. |

i think all your designs are a bit lacking ... not just in this thread but all of them ...
shading is alright ... but all designs are a bit main stream as i would say .. they all seem o be just thr nowm .. sugar skulls and sacred haearts .. u know .. i dunno its hard to crit a few pieces rather than 1 ... but i think as of now u have some shading pretty much down if ur going for a newschool look that is ... all of them are just a bit bland .. why dont u do a new 1 soon n post just that 1 so u can get a good solid crit on it .. -------------------- www.inkedbythenerd.com swallowsndaggers tattoo forum Swallows and Daggers Support The Traditional Movement Tattoo Artist, Painter, Asshole and Machine Collector |

The out line on this one seems pretty solid, in fact I like it a lot, but it almost seems as though your coloring is stuck somewhere between old school and new school. The color scheme is indicative of new school but the tones you have there lean more towards old school. If you were to make it darker with a lot more black and take out the yellow highlights in favor of negative space it would be a great traditional design or you can make the colors a lot more rich and vibrant and this could be a great new school piece. As it is, it does seem very bland but with a little attention this one has some real potential, give it another go brother. |

The Nerd: Thanks for the feedback. I was reading a post here recently that kind of hit me, I think it's called sticking to the plan or something. Anyways, I have a tendency to rework and rework designs, and something I've found looking through here and looking back over my stuff is that I think I'm working the soul out of all of my pieces. Also, I've kind of been sticking to the norm at the moment just to fill up my portfolio, but I think I really could stretch the boundaries more and try to inject more personality into my designs.
purplethumb: I've never been taught the different color schemes and how they apply to trad/neotrad/new school. I tend to blur the lines it seems. I've heard of the 1/3 rule, but never had it explained to me. I think I will try tracing the outline and using my new Muji pencils (these were all done using 24 Crayolas, so color choice was a bit lacking, as was vibrance), perhaps I'll even go both bright, popping newschool and traditional, muted tones to see which one I like better. Thanks for your advice. |

I think you have a good eye for lighting and shadows. You understand blending and negative space too. I think these are a great start. 1/3 rule is a general old school guideline. 1/3 black, 1/3 mid tone, 1/3 negative space. I learned it from our very own Joe Sleepy. Look for his stuff in art class, the woodshed, and the contests. You can learn a lot from his art and posts in the archives.

Hey thanks J.D. Joe's work was actually a huge factor in me signing up for this place. Good to know about the 1/3 rule, I always thought you wanted to try to avoid empty space, but that was taught to me by a straight new school guy, my traditional work never seemed to quite catch "the look" I want. By the way, is that probloodborne.com BBP cert legit? It said I passed the test and could pay $20 for the cert within 60 days. might be a nice piece of paper to have for the future.

I've seen a pro tattoo artist with one, but if you're not in a shop, it's really not worth shit. I think it's great that they're putting the videos out for free though.
