Over the past few weeks, I've noticed that people are voting for a variety of designs, some of which are either undeveloped sketches and/or not "TATTOOABLE." The idea of this contest series was to challenge everyone to design tattooable flash that could be used for building a versatile portfolio.

When deciding the winner, you should not be voting for a design you think is cute, funny, or clever but rather for the most developed and professional design/entry. For the sake of this forum, I implore you to consider this when you cast your votes. If a professional artist came to the site, would he/she be impressed with the caliber of work we are contributing (and subsequently voting for)?

I hope that every artist will keep this in mind and remember that these contests are meant to challenge you and your artistic comfort zone. I hope that all those casting votes remember that you should vote only for the design that looks the most like a tattoo/flash design in a professional artist's portfolio.

While I understand that many people come to this forum for the welcoming community, the main goal of creating this site was to push each other to learn and improve our artistic skills as they relate to the art of tattooing.

Thanks for reading.

im confused?? huh.gif is this "flash" contest not meant to be a bit of "fun"? who has won when they "shouldnt have"? if there is a poll and people have the freedom to choose themselves who they think is the winner, then how can anybody contest the result of such poll? majority decision ,a democratic voting system.
i also agree with Tatboy . i personally HATE flash designs, i have looked thru 10`s of thousands of flash sheets and can i find something i WANT to work with? no not really. when i open my shop next year, i will encourage people to bring me rough design ideas of what they want and i or my partner in crime(a pro artist) will work on it before hitting skin with a mutually agreed design..tattooing has evolved since old skool, less and less people want official flash tattoo`s. more want custom work, alot of these are from ideas that are initially un workable.

the bottom line of my opinion is this: one person , or two, or even 3 can not decide if a piece of art/flash is good or deserves to win . you have to go with MAJORITY DECISION.

also the "for the sake of this forum" line is just wrong Jason. you have nearly 1000 members here and average 10 competition entries per week. im guessing (we could tell from the hits count) that alot of the nearly 1000 dont even look at the competition thread.

Essex, I agree that most people want custom designs. But as Joe said, asking for everyone's best work creates a more realistic environment that resembles the demands of creating a custom tattoo. I also agree that these contests are decided by a democratic vote, and I am not intending to change that but merely define what we criteria we are judging on.

Make excuses for laziness if you feel you must. Scratchers will always be scratchers. You shed the label the day you take tattooing seriously. (Note: This is not directed at anyone in particular, but merely a statement directed at us all).

I am done.

QUOTE(Blackwidow @ Oct 15 2007, 10:14 PM) *
i thought the main aim was to have fun .. a friendly contest ... or at least it was set out to be as such. Now it seems fun just got serious and the small fry need not apply. There are alot of skill variants that would suffer if the rulings as above are brought into effect ... i know i am in no position to compete with Joe for example ... his work will always be 'pro' standard in comparison (sorry to use you as an example Mr Sleepy). If we were looking at making flash sheets from the contest winners then i could understand the need for high-end designs but it started out being about peoples creative imaginations ... their take on a given theme. i can understand half finished sketches being omitted from judging but i fail to see how people like myself will enter now you just raised the stakes to 'pro level'! i seldom get time to sit and draw as it is with 4 kids and a home to keep (i know i chose a real crappy time in life to commence my dream and i hold no one to fault) and i felt good within myself if i managed to enter anything at all ... i don't win and i don't expect to .. it was all about the taking part!

mrs widow again makes a top notch point..
the contest was started as FUN.. who gives a crap whats entered.. the people that enter half drawn designs arent winning... they just wanna take part and I think thats cool.. hell I entered once with a peice of art that definitely couldnt have been tattoo. it was just something I was feeling at the moment and it fit the theme.. so I contributed..

once there is something actually to win.. like something REAL.. gift card to a tattoo supply shop, ink trails swag.. something like that then I could see the rules of the game being lifted a notch or more.. but right now its all about FUN and keeping people active in the forums..

all I see this post doing is discourgaing people that may have posted something....

just my .02

Well might as well put in my two cents... or 2.04146 USD hehehe

First off, I admit that I've entered some unfinished/lazy pencil sketches on lined paper (space mouse)! LOL But since the only
real time I have time to draw is at work, I don't have anything else... And since my schedule is not poured
in concrete, I never know when I'll actually have quality drawing time... But I promise I won't do it again, my mouse was my way
of trying to be funny. I apologize.

I don't really know on which side of this "argument" (if you want to call it that) I'm on... I do agree with Mr. Jason
here that since this a Flash design contest, submitted art should be done to the best of our abilities.
And the art has to be finished.. now what does finish mean, well that's up to the artist, with the intent of having said
art work possibly tattooed on someone.

But I also tend to agree with the "fun" part, and showing design concepts as well. Big Evil's drawing, as mentioned
before, was not completed. But hey! I'd get that as a tattoo.. so I voted for it because this was contested related
to tattoos. Now if the contest was a straight "Sci-Fi Art Contest", then no I would not have voted for it.

So I guess I don't have any problems with what has been said so far on the subject. Everyone has good arguments really.
The only thing that needs to be done is agree on is:
Do we vote for something we would personally like as a tattoo ourselves (either finished or concept),
or vote for the drawing that's completely finished (either colored or B/W shaded) and would just look like a good tattoo on someone.
(hope I'm making sense here) But perhaps having 2 weeks instead of 1 would give time for people to pump better quality work...

The only problem with the rules I have would be the "not using photoshop". If this is a flash contest why not use photoshop
to make something completely symmetrical? For example a skull/mirror image type stuff...
I'm sure the Pros do this, but then again I could be wrong... tongue.gif

Well gotta go to work... If i didn't make any sense, just tell me...

Well personally i think anything that is executed on paper can be transisioned to a tattoo with a good artist behind the needle so i'm a little confused when you say something that is not "TATTOOABLE." even a sketch can be tattooable.

I just realized i was being talked about on here...I'M FAMOUS!

I enter for the fun of being able to share my ideas with like minded individuals. I follow the thread because I like seeing other peoples takes on the same subject.

If this becomes a big issue, maybe we should just drop the word "contest" and have a different thread each week with a new subject for the members to tackle at their own pace.

Can't we all just ART along?

sounds good to me. if everyone goes back and reads the first one of these we had it CLEARLY says this is supposed to be for fun and for growing as an artist. i think the powers that be are losing sight of that......ah fuck it ! it is what it is. i don't care anymore.........

I was going to refrain from commenting anymore but it strikes me as odd that a general call for aspiring tattoo artists to give their best effort would result in so much push back. Submit whatever you want. Vote for whomever you want. I was merely trying to rally the active members of this forum (including myself) to bring their "A" game.

When I saw Sleepy Joe's designs, it made me want to step up my game and spend more time on my entries. I thought by trying to raise the bar, it would do the same for others. I suppose you live and learn.

Rather than "delete" this topic, I'll close it. I;ve said my piece, and you;ve said yours. I look forward to seeing all of your entries this week wink.gif
