...had come across a set called 'russian criminal tattoo encyclopadeia' (i know, i ve spelt it wrong)......
i think there s vol 1 and 2 till now, 3 comin out. had bought a copy from ebay back then but the guy said it got lost during delivery so i got refund but never the book/s. book is now either out of print or ten times as much as i bought it for. was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper source, or of a copy somebody wants to get rid of at a fair price.. thanks -------------------- remember to always be yourself! unless you suck.

Love the books. And if you're into that stuff, there's a Movie called "Mark of Cain" by Alix Lambert which is a documentary about Russian Prisons and tattoos there...

By the way they have sold I'd hang in there for a reprint. It's likely to happen. They are pretty amazing designs but the books also go into the whole history and stories of life in the gulags. Very full on. Makes Pelican Bay seem like the Hilton. (............well, maybe not quite) You'd want to read it well before you went for any of the designs. They all have an easily understood (by the Russians) meaning, and many of them are forcibly applied for all sorts of reasons. You wouldn't want to get that cool looking rat in fishnets, only to find out it means you were locked up for stealing womens undies. (I just made that up but you get the idea.) |

lol, hell yeah i know what you mean.. in russian underground culture, some of the symbols belong to particular mafia families, or need to be earned before being worn.. for instance, having stars on your knees would mean that you kneel down to nobody, spider going up a web means you still into crime, going down you ve changed ways.. things like that.
was watching the special features to eastern promises, where there s a (very) short discussion on this. some russian mafia guys are so proud of this, that on seeing their family tattoos on anyone else they would not hesitate to go rip off his skin on the spot- because he doesnt deserve them.. however i beleive some tattoos could be less popular, and have a much wider meaning -would be interesting for me to find something i could identify with, or find a parallel in my life. was thinking of adding a bit to my knuckles- i dont know much about the topic but would be happy to browse, read more... see if anything catches my attention.. -------------------- remember to always be yourself! unless you suck.

We have a close friend of the family who is from Russia, and was in prison there for some time, so I can always run stuff by him if you'd like.

yeah i ve ordered the lambert book and dvd - the encycopedia went sky high though, i guess i ll either find someone willing to part off a used copy or wait for a reprint..

eastern promises was a pretty badass movie.... though in my opinion they could have abbreviated the bath house scene a bit and not been so graphic lol, naked dudes fighting isnt that cool

i could be wrong, but not as far as i know.. have watched a few youtube clips to it, while waiting for my order.. they were all in subs, i guess if it went out in english i would have found one that way - but again i could be wrong
