This site is not a substitute for a professional apprenticeship with a licensed tattoo studio. Nor is this site a definitive source for learning the art or trade of tattooing. An apprenticeship is the ONLY universally accepted way to learn proper safety practices and sound technique.
While we welcome members of all levels, we STRONGLY advocate staying away from skin until you've received formal training from someone who works in the field. Hell, even hair stylists must complete over a year of courses, pass a state health board exam, and apprentice under a professional studio before earning a chair.
The trade of tattooing has a rich history and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. If you respect the art, please show your respects by learning the right way.

I HAVE PROBABLY DONE AROUND 40 TATTOOS. SOMETIMES MY LINES STILL ARENT AS SHARP AS I WANT.
MY SON WHO HAS MORE EXPERIENCE TOLD ME TO JUST BURY THE NEEDLE AND GO FOR IT. COULD THAT BE MY PROBLEM, THAT I'M LETTING UP A LITTLE, BECAUSE I CAN TELL IT HURTS, WHAT DO YOU THINK? |

He's probably got a point. I know that when riding the needle I sometimes have a tendency to pull back a bit when the "client" sucks their teeth. Lines are too faint & I have to redo them.
Just gotta be brave about it & ignore the moans. Like Eric (I think it was him) says, "Tattoo's, they're not licked on by kittens!" -------------------- "In this truck is a man whose latent genius, if unleashed, would rock the nation, whose dynamic energy would overpower those around him. Better let him sleep?"

How does your machine run, after 40 tattoos how do you feel, (whats your view) how have they been healing, what ink ? without photos will be hard.
When you say sharp, that might not be a matter of just burying the needle, you rather might need to pull out as you finish your line. |

know what u mean. i tend to hold back. but the guys at the shops said i was takin too long with the outlines cuz i have to keep doin another pass or so. they said dont be afraid. tattoos are meant to hurt or suppose to hurt. so now. i just go at it. I know exactly what you mean. I would argue with my husband saying that he was being nasty by thinking that they were paying for the pain. So, when I would do a tat, I would be sensitive to the person's pain...Well...Guess what? My tattoos turned out greyish or not evenly filled enough, my tribalsl, for example. And his would turn out black as sh*** without barely any touchups. So now, I go for it and tell them to grind their teeth if it hurts 'cause I ain't gonna stop...that's it is uncomfortable but it's necessary for a nice tattoo...I explain to them that it's gonna hurt some but they'll be realy proud when it's finished. My tats are now much nicer and my liner definately more solid. Bold and crisp like it should be and it looks so much better. We learn something new each day is this trade and I find that absolutely wonderful. |
