theres too many lurkers about, maybe the forums should be unavailable to those who dont register, might give people a little more incentive to post?

This is something we've talked about, but it's difficult to find a balance. However, if none of the content is available to guests that makes it unavailable to Google which means less people will find it and reduce membership even more. I am open to ideas...

I was into Radio control stuff a few years back and I joined a forum called got nitro, they had it setup so you could only read certain threads in guest mode but if you took the time to register you got access to a lot more abd if you were a paid member you got access to all. Hope this helps. -------------------- |

i have seen this also, leave one or 2 of the forums open... but yeah, i geuss making it unsearchable would be a bit of a downfall...
theres obviously alot of other people out there, and there is people definatly reading the threads, but more feedback and opinions is better! i geuss it comes down to people being lazy, even if they do sign up you cant force them to post |

maybe they want to take the newfound knowledge they have and get comfortable with it before they give others advice, maybe just posting "i agree" doesnt seem like its post worthy just to get a higher number, maybe its the first forum they've signed up for, and they try to post and try to be friends but it just doesnt work out that way, they feel shunned for one reason or another, so they think that what they have to say doesn't really matter anyway. "please dont dominate the rap, jack, if you got nothin new to say" kinda thing

haha... its frustrating, why not just join in on the fun, the more the merrier right? out of sheer curiosity how long did you read on the forum before purchasing a membership? seems to me that if the pages werent accessible before purchasing a membership, how many people would really take a gamble & spend the money to see whats inside? -------------------- *PARENTAL ADVISORY* i say fuck alot!

You can read every board as a guest, but need to sign-up to post. Now, some forums like Show & Tell require a paid membership to start a topic, but you can still reply.
There was talk of creating an invisible VIP room for only PAID members. My only concern has been that people would post all the good stuff in there. What do you guys think? -------------------- Stay humble.

What do you guys think? i personally dont see a problem with it. alot of forums have areas that are only for paid subscription members where the more in depth / advanced info is posted & such. give them enuff to keep things clean & safe , but make then pay to read about any advanced techniques & things like that. -------------------- *PARENTAL ADVISORY* i say fuck alot!

I do not wish to offend anyone here. But if a person talks of being a serious tatoo artist and are willing to spend the cash involved on equipment and so forth and them come up with some sad ass excuss as to why they cannot pay a $20 for a lifetime membership, screw them, we can do with out them. I say lock it down. If you were to start a VIP and the better info was posted there non members should have to contribute to access it. And if I have upset anyone sorry, and to bad.

i agree, theres is alot of good info on here, sometimes alot more then what you would get in an aprenticeship, i dont think junior memembers should be able to post, and i think alot more of this site shold be closed to geusts, i dont see any benifit for being a full memeber, all we have paid for is to be able to PM each other, and junior members can just display there email anyway, such as that topic about machine setup, you have a huge amount of new members first post asking for the Ebook to be emailed to them, then you never see them again, ive started ignoring them will only send it off to full memebers now, maybe im being a prick but thats my veiws.

ok my 2 cents... for what it's worth
it's very easy to build a website, but incredibly hard to build a community... shutting doors doesn't build a sense of community, it does however create a clique environment where new folk feel on the outer from the get go. I have built forums for national organizations, individuals, and all stops in between, and can say with absolute certainty that it's new comers enthusiasm that keeps these places going. It's normal for energies to wain and life to get in the way at times. On-line communities live and die on the flow of folk coming through the door, without them places quickly degenerate into just the few hard core regulars who make up the kernel of any site. Sort of like any association, the admin is the virtual chairman, moderators are akin to committee members, and the voices from the floor are those who's faces change from one meeting to the next. It's very easy to close sections of a forum site to none members, but as was said this can bring about it's own problems... one thing I found useful was to leave the topic headings in every section available to be seen by non members to wet their appetites, but have open access to read and post only available to a general section In this case you could leave the Administrative section available to read (not post) and the Party & Bullshit sections open to all... that way people could firstly find out about the site, how it works, the rules etc. which would give them a degree of confidence about the site's content, along with the information they need to be able to join Then they could do a bit of lurking around the general population in the Party section and gain a measure of comfort getting to know some of the members names and general demeanor in that environment. it's just a thought as far as members who don't log in when they drop by to check the boards each time goes... Devo and I have been guilty of that often the reason for it was (until last weekend when I had time to fix a few things) we could only login using Ie, not with firefox we hate Ie and never use it unless we absolutly have to... so I came by and checked things out each day (some days a few times) using firefox... but every now and then we would open Ie and login to post stuff there was nothing sinister... just technical difficulties which are now fixed cheers gail This post has been edited by gb-devo: May 25 2008, 03:00 PM -------------------- courage and serenity I got... it's wisdom I'm lacking

gb,
Well written post, and very thoughtful. You've summarized exactly why this forum has been kept open to all. However, I do think that being a Full Member has little benefits other than the aforementioned "perks." It's more about supporting the place (like a PBS membership). I've created a new section called "MEMBERS ONLY." I figure we'll slowly move over any tutorials and posts that cover more advanced techniques. ALl you members should poke around in there and tell me if any other sub-forms would be a good idea... Thanks to all for feedback! -------------------- Stay humble.

A VIP section is a great idea IMO.
As mentioned by Gail, maybe visitors could access the topic titles in a VIP section but need to subscribe to access the actual content? Moving all the cool tutorials and information EXCEPT the "Sterilization, health & Safety" forum. Maybe leave that one for public access. -------------------- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."
