thanks man..  that is exactly what I found.. But it says nothing about having to be licensed..

Like I myself don't have to be licensed.. the tattoo shop I work in (or open) has to be licensed..

is that how it is everywhere?  I was under the assumption that I had to be livensed myself not just the shop..

Every state is differant. Usually the shop has to be licensed by the health dept. and you will need to have a tax id number from the state to start your own business.

in california the shop needs to be licenced by the dept. of health...you  as an artist are supposed to go to a class so you are aware of blood bourne pathogens and other potential things that you may come into contact with while tattooing...however i dont believe that it is required...but you can never be to careful....

The laws here in Arkansas have recently changed (otherwise I would be finishing up my apprenticeship right now).  There are only certain shops in the state that can perform apprenticeships (now called artist training).  At the time of the law change, any shop wishing to do training had to pay out $25,000 to be certified to teach.  The health dept. is still involved but the training is regulated by a division of the Dept. of Education.

Also, in Missouri to get a license you just have to fill out an application and send in $75.  If approved, you're licensed for 2 years.

I mean unless they were going to charge a couple grand to appretice..  wow.. that sucks

That's the thing, they charge for the training.  The cheapest I have found is $9000 and I've heard some shops are charging up to $16,000+.  Greedy bastards!

while the charges are retardedly high, it's kind of that way for a reason...seperates those who REALLLLY wanna tattoo from those who don't.

Here in Oregon, i've found a couple for $6000-$8000.

If they didn't charge super high ammounts, the market would be flooded with tattooist...blah blah blah...and in the end, they probably couldn't make a decent living at it due to the overflooded market.  Too many tattooists = pricing dropping ...in the long run, the only ones who could stick that out, are ones that could afford to tattoo for minimum wage.  That's no good.

It is expensive, but, it's just payin dues.  :D

Actually, before the law change here, it was still high but it did come down to greed.  If the artists don't want to flood the market and the state says you have to apprentice, all they have to do is refuse not to teach someone.  The first person I asked for an apprenticeship told me $5000 and when I asked him why I had to pay, he told me that it showed commitment.  I simply looked at him and asked him "Wasn't me selling my car to buy my equipment enough of a sign?"  So there for, in my eyes, the money is there because of greed.
