> Guidelines for Giving Feedback

Please consider the following when giving feedback on a member's tattoo:

Line work: Does the artist seem to have grasped the technique of applying smooth, consistent lines? Do the lines flow with no shakes, skips or blow-outs?

Fill: Are all color and black areas a consistent color?

Shading: Does the tattoo show smooth gradients and transition effectively from light to dark?

Color Harmony:
Does the tattoo have colors that compliment each other?

Placement/Size:
Does the tattoo seem to be the right size for the area chosen? Is it centered and lined up with any other work? Does it go with the flow of the body?

Design: How well does the overall design work? Does it have sound composition? Does it feel well thought out?

Feedback: What areas could be improved?

This is a tattoo I did on myself....There are definately some linework issues (shakey, inconsistent, overlapping)...I used a new machine, it is iron and slightly heavier than the other, so i was a little shaky untill i got the hang of it, plus I was more nervous tattooing myself than someone else......Some of the greyshade needs improving (not faded enough).....Its far from perfect, but it is acceptable for a second piece. Oh, and its not finished, colorwise (note the tail.

lINE WORK AS YOU SAID IS PRETTY ROUGH, PLUS SOME LINES RUN INTO EACH OTHER ON THE SCALES. COLOR WORK IS NOT BAD.....KEEP PRACTICING....SWITCHING MACHINES CAN BE ROUGH THOUGH.

i would spend a little time practicing drawing koi. i think spending more time learning to draw them will make for easier tattooing in the future... koi would be a little too detailed for a second tattoo

Totally agree! The tattoo is good for your second attempt but it isn't without it's problems as people have stated already, but you know that and it's something for you to improve on. I am still doing fairly simple things at the moment, I really want to get my linework as neat as possible before attempting pieces that cannot be touched up on the lines! Everyone goes at their own pace and mine still seems to be crawling, although I am starting to grab hold of the table and pull myself up biggrin.gif

I learned a lot from this tattoo. I did a rather large old school piece not long after this (pics when it heals), I found that (and im sure this is no secret) when you are doing multiple line like that, to stop short of where they are to join, wipe, and then you can just touch it in, and be right there. Its amazing how moch my lines improved since this tattoo.

there's some minor line work problems but if this is really your second tattoo
that's pretty damn good. i think there's probably a lot of people out there that
can't do this good after 15 or 16 tats.
i'd be stoked to have that on me, great job!
and by the way, judging from how this looks i doubt you need to practice drawing
(any more than everyone needs to practice!). it just looks like you need
to concentrate a little more while lining. really though, nice tattoo.
sorry, had to edit a little: i'm not trying to give you too much confidence but
i've seen plenty of shop tats that don't look this good.
i think you're gonna be awesome after a few more tries.

sorry but ill have to disagree. your design definatly needs work.. you have done well for your second tattoo, but the koi itself is nothing too flash at all..
theres always room for improvement, no matter how many people tell you how good you are

the bright colours take away the eye from the linework, which helps :-)

from a distance it looks real good, but closer up theres clear faults ( of course for 2nd tattoo..)
if a bit more careful attention was paid to the fins and tail it would have looked a lot tidier i think. the body and head look ok.

I agree, its better than most folks 2nd tattoos, a lot of that is down to the design choice and the bold colours and thick outline choice.
but it looks passable to not have to wear long trousers all the time til its fixed up lol :-D

I am a firm believer that we are never done learning or practicing. Thanks for all the good compliments, as well as the criticism. I always wanted to tattoo, and now I am in a piont in my life to do it, and do it right. One day, i will start a shop on the east coast, but for now, I am still at the drawing board. Thanks ALL
